To be able to submit a proposal for the DFF or Carlsberg calls you will need a so-called ‘housing commitment’ from the Head of Department. This is to make sure all proposals submitted from the department are aligned with department policies, and to secure the quality of each proposal.

You will need to submit a letter of interest to ls@hum.ku.dk no later than August 16th for you to be able to submit a full application to DFF or Carlsberg later this fall.

The letter of interest should provide the following:

  • An abstract of your project idea (no more than 1 page):
Please include a short description of your project’s originality held against state-of-the-art, the main research objectives and a stipulation of your research design.

  • Staffing plan
If you are not familiar with the form, please contact me for instructions. The information needed for the staffing plan is however:
     - Starting date and length of project period
     - Name and title of all project members (and also institutional affiliation for anyone who will not be employed at KU).
     - An estimate of months per year that each participants will be working on the project. (You should also note how many of these months you want the foundation to pay for and how many months each of the participants will be spending of their own research time.)

  • Academic employments (only for participants in your project that are not yet employed at UCPH). This is to be used for salary calculations.

Please do come by Lin Solvang at office 14.3.47 if you have questions or need to discuss any aspects of the staffing plan or project design before sending a letter of interest – or send an e-mail for ls@hum.ku.dk.

If you are granted a housing commitment by the department, you will receive a detailed process plan by August 22nd. You should be prepared to put in a large part of the work during the last weeks of August and the first half of September. For instance, your application will undergo an internal Peer Review process to help you improve your proposal text, so be aware that a text draft should be ready for a reviewer to read by September 2nd.

The call deadline is October 1st for Carlsberg and October 4th for DFF.

Velux ‘core-group program’

The Velux Foundation has invited the newly merged Department of Communication to send 3 applications to the biannual instrument Kernegruppe-programmet / The Core-group program. As we are only allowed to submit this limited number of applications, there will be an internal selection process at the department. The process will be as follows:

The Department’s Research Committee (FU)  will review preliminary proposals and make a prioritized list from which the department’s leadership team will choose which three applications will go forward (keeping in mind the two departments’ strategic research goals, as the Velux Core-group program has an emphasis on the development and strengthening of strategical important research areas within the Humanities).

The three applications selected for submission to Velux will be sent through the department’s internal Peer Review process in order to improve the quality of the proposals.

The department’s deadline for sending a letter of interest to ls@hum.ku.dk is October 7th. By then you should provide the following:

  • Draft application (max. 3 pages) NOTE the description below *
  • Staffing plan
  • Academic employments (only for named participants in your project that are not yet employed at UCPH)

No later than October 31st you will be informed if your proposal was one of the three proposals selected for submission to Velux and you will receive a detailed process plan for the submission of drafts, the finalizing of staffing plans, creation of budgets etc.

What is a core group?

A core group is a closely collaborating research team typically consisting of one or two senior researchers (associate professors or full professors) as project managers, possibly a number of senior researchers, and 2-3 postdoctoral scholars and/or PhD students.

A core group may consist of researchers from the same department or researchers across departments and universities. The Velux core-group projects are typically granted 5-6 mio DKK.

*) NOTE: How to write a draft application

The project description must be written in English and should include:

  • The overall project's hypothesis, aims, research questions, relationship to state-of-the-art research in the field, theory and methodology, and its alignment with the host institution's research strategy.
  • Brief presentation of each sub-project and how such are linked.
  • Project period and timetable, and publication and dissemination plans.

Also, it will strengthen your proposal, if you are able to address and include a paragraph addressing one or both of the following issues:

  • How can your research group be characterized as an up-and-coming research team with emerging ideas, and how will a grant thereby strengthen the humanities within the national and international eco-system?
  • How will a grant serve as a 'stepping stone' to larger and/or international grants?

Please do come by Lin Solvang at the Administration if you have questions to the process or need to discuss your staffing plan or project – or send an e-mail for ls@hum.ku.dk
