Professor Peter Adamson: Virtue ethics in the Arabic tradition

28. oktober 2011 kl. 15.00

Peter Adamson is one of the most important scholars in the field of Greek and Arabic Neoplatonic philosophy. Among his works we find The Arabic Plotinus: a Philosophical Study of the "Theology of Aristotle” (London: Duckworth, 2002) and his Great Medieval Thinkers: al-Kindi (New York: Oxford University Press, 2007). For Adamson’s work and interests, please see
Workshop. Open to MA and PhD students. Please register in advance: Upon registration we shall forward the source to be discussed during the workshop. Time and place: October 28, 1:15-2:45 PM, University of Copenhagen, Amager, lecture room 17.2.251C.
Paper. The Arabic tradition represents a second flowering of virtue ethics, following on the Greek Aristotelian tradition. Authors such as al-Farabi, al-Razi, Yahya ibn 'Adi and Miskawayh were strongly influenced by Aristotle's Ethics and the commentaries written on that work. In this paper I will discuss how the Aristotelian strand in Arabic philosophy interacted with another Hellenic influence: the idea of psychological medicine, which derived from the works of Galen. I will also discuss how Greek ethical ideas interacted with themes from the Qur'an and Islamic rational theology (kalam). The lecture is open to the public. No registration is needed. Time and place: October 28, 3:15 – 5:00 PM, University of Copenhagen, Amager, lecture room 27.0.09.
Organized by The Centre for Neoplatonic Virtue Ethics, University of Copenhagen: Contact: Leo Catana ( Læs mere

Culture, Identity and Recognition

07. oktober 2011 kl. 11:00

Read full program here
In recent years, interest in the notion of recognition has been growing in the social sciences and in philosophy, and increasingly this interest can also be found in cultural studies. Concurrently, the question of recognition has shifted its focus. For some time the theoretical discussions were mainly bound to the question of recognition of the collective identities of social or ethnic groups.
However, since the 1990s discussions have centered more and more on the question of how social relations and human interactions contribute to the construction of the individual's identity.  Which role do cultural dimensions play in the struggle for recognition, and is it possible to identify universal, formal dimensions of this struggle, which might function as the foundation for a progressive, inclusive European identity? Can articulations of migratory experience in the cultural field he...

Associate Professor Aksel Haaning: Det tolvte århundredes platonisme: Etiske implikationer

05. oktober 2011 kl. 15.00

Foredraget vil tage udgangspunkt i begrebet det "religiøse" i antik filosofi, og på den baggrund præsentere det 12. århundredes platonisme i vestlig filosofi.
